Thoughts

Gill I will always remember our conversations. Gill loved to share her Wisdomwhen discussing deep and meaningful topics. A sparkle would cometo Gill eyes and voice when talking about nature, and sharing the good things that had happened in her long life. Gill enjoy the peace you will have now found. I know you are looking down in some way, watching over the family you cared so much about. Rest in Peace Gary

I have shared the lovely obituary you created with all my children - and they were all very touched. We all wish, as stupidly busy people do, that we’d been able to spend more time with her - and with our extended families. . My own memories go back to Old Tiles, when I would stay with Granny and pop down to see GIll. I used to help her hang out the washing - mostly holding the peg bag! We woud reward ourselves with a cup of te for her, and squash for me - and Pattersons petticoat tail shortbread. Just one. One day she was waiting for me beside the magnolia (which was quite small then) called me over, held out her cupped hands and slid a baby hedgehog into mine - it was a furry rather than prickly pencil sharpener! It kept it me company, travelling in my pencil case and sitting on my desk (and sharpening pencils) for many years! I loved Gill’s willingness to accept and support - writing letters and cards in her italic hand inviting me, when everything went pear-shaped, to bring Stephen to a delightful 60th Wedding celebration. And I loved her faith, her joy in her grandchildren, and her enthusiasm and curiosity about our boating life when she and Alan spotted us moored up in Banbury, and came aboard for soup. Sending much love to you all.

Gill taught me - that's such a strange way of putting it - more, created the conditions in which I could observe, absorb and stumblingly work over forty years ago, at a typical girls grammar school. She was teaching part-time at the school, and was a figure of some glamour and mystery to us all, I think. She was so unlike most of the women who taught us. They all worked hard at their profession, but she so obviously had a life outside teaching at our school, both with her other work, and her family life. Even the way she looked was more vivid than her colleagues – elegant, deft movements, and I’ll always remember her smoky green eyeshadow. She treated us with a mix of amusement and occasional exasperation, but also took us seriously (and not always at our own estimation of ourselves)! I have the Bible gifted by Surrey Education Committee which Gill inscribed for me – as she must have for hundreds of others. I’m so pleased to have, apart from memories, a tangible remembrance of her, particularly in an area in which she was so skilled. She was never anything other than kind and encouraging to me. My mother joins me in sending our condolences to Sarah, Elizabeth, Alan and the wider family.
