Gill taught me - that's such a strange way of putting it - more, created the conditions in which I could observe, absorb and stumblingly work over forty years ago, at a typical girls grammar school. She was teaching part-time at the school, and was a figure of some glamour and mystery to us all, I think. She was so unlike most of the women who taught us. They all worked hard at their profession, but she so obviously had a life outside teaching at our school, both with her other work, and her family life. Even the way she looked was more vivid than her colleagues – elegant, deft movements, and I’ll always remember her smoky green eyeshadow. She treated us with a mix of amusement and occasional exasperation, but also took us seriously (and not always at our own estimation of ourselves)! I have the Bible gifted by Surrey Education Committee which Gill inscribed for me – as she must have for hundreds of others. I’m so pleased to have, apart from memories, a tangible remembrance of her, particularly in an area in which she was so skilled. She was never anything other than kind and encouraging to me. My mother joins me in sending our condolences to Sarah, Elizabeth, Alan and the wider family.
